Dermatography is a condition known as "writing on the skin". When a person with dermatographia gently rubs the skin, the skin will redden and become inflamed exactly where it was touched. These spots disappear in about 30 minutes
The cause of dermatographia is unknown, but in some patients it is caused by infection, emotional stress, or medications such as penicillin.
The majority of patients do not require treatment If the signs and symptoms are too bothersome, your doctor may suggest anti-allergy medications such as diphenhydramine.

- Raised, red lines
- Swelling
- Inflammation
- A raised, allergy-like rash
- Itching
Signs and symptoms within minutes of skin contact or burning Rarely, dermatography develops more slowly and lasts for several hours or days
The condition itself may persist for months or years
