Neuroendocrine tumors

Neuroendocrine tumors are abnormal growths that form in specialized cells - neuroendocrine cells. These cells have properties similar to nerve and hormone-producing cells

Neuroendocrine tumors are rare and can develop anywhere in the body The majority of such tumors are found in the lungs, colon, small intestine, rectum, and pancreas.

Neuroendocrine tumors can be both benign and malignant.

Examples of neuroendocrine tumors:

• Carcinoid tumors of the lung, digestive tract or thymus
• Neuroendocrine tumor of the pancreas - the same islet cell cancer
• Medullary thyroid cancer
