Thyroid cancer

Thyroid tumors arise in the thyroid gland, which is a butterfly-shaped gland located under the thyroid cartilage. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight.

Thyroid tumor is not common a Sh In Sh., however, the number of cases is increasing According to doctors, this is because modern technology allows us to detect very small tumors, which was previously impossible.

Most thyroid tumors are curable with treatment
It is not known what causes thyroid cancer

Thyroid tumor develops as a result of genetic mutation of thyroid cells This mutation allows cells to multiply and divide rapidly Cells also lose their ability to die Accumulated cells form a tumor Pathological cells can invade surrounding tissues and spread throughout the body

Thyroid tumor forms

Treatment and prognosis depend on the form of thyroid tumor Forms of thyroid tumor are:

  • Papillary tumor The most common form of thyroid cancer that arises from follicular cells Follicle cells produce and store hormones Papillary tumors can occur at any age, although they are most common between the ages of 30 and 50
  • Follicular tumor Follicular tumors can also arise from the follicular cells of the thyroid gland It mainly occurs in people over 50 years of age Tumor developed from Hürtle cells is a rare and aggressive form of follicular cancer
  • medullary tumor Medullary tumors begin in the C cells of the thyroid gland These cells produce the hormone calcitonin Elevated levels of calcitonin in the blood can detect medullary carcinoma at an early stage Some genetic syndromes increase the risk of medullary tumors, although this genetic link is rare
  • Anaplastic tumor Anaplastic tumor is a rare, fast growing and difficult to treat tumor Anaplastic tumors develop in people over 60 years of age
  • Lymphoma Thyroid lymphoma is a rare form of cancer that begins in the immune cells of the thyroid gland and grows rapidly. Lymphoma of the thyroid gland occurs in elderly people

Thyroid cancer usually does not cause signs or symptoms in its early stages As the tumor grows, it can cause:

  • a lump that can be felt under the skin in the neck
  • voice changes, including hoarseness
  • difficulty swallowing
  • pain in the neck or throat
  • lymph nodes in the neck Thyroid cancer is rare, so the doctor will first try to find another cause
